Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) May 31, 2011

As a mother who happens to be a dermatologist, Dr. Robin Schaffran is passionate about the health benefits of sun protection. Lately her patients have been concerned about news stories that question the ingredient safety and efficacy of sunscreen and whether we should even use sunscreen on our children.

The issue is complex and there is research to back many different arguments and points of view. But as a doctor and a mother, Dr. Schaffran feels comfortable stating that sunscreens, however imperfect, are the best way to prevent skin cancer. The risk of skin cancer from not using sunscreen far outweighs any potential risks from sunscreen use.

That doesn’t mean all sunscreens work in the same way or that you shouldn’t pay attention to ingredients. For a comprehensive sunscreen FAQ’s go to http://www.drrobin.md/frequently-asked-questions.html. Here’s a quick primer to help you make the right choice for you and your family.

Is Sunscreen Effective?

After a report by the Environmental Working Group stated that only 39 out of 500 sunscreens provided adequate protection, Dr. Schaffran was inundated with concerned patients asking if it’s true that most sunscreens don’t work.

While it’s true that SPF claims don’t offer as much protection as the number the packaging promises, it’s not because the ingredients don’t work. It has much more to do with how we apply sunscreen.

Consumers generally apply only 1/2 to 1/5 the necessary amount of sunscreen for proper protection. An easy way to solve this problem: increase the amount of sunscreen you use and more importantly, re-apply after swimming and sweating. Wearing sunscreen does not give you a license to sit in direct sun. Sunscreen use should always be enhanced by hats and sun protective clothing.

Do sunscreens contain toxic or harmful ingredients?

A recent FDA study made headlines when it suggested an association between retinyl palmitate (a derivative of Vitamin A) and cancer. Subsequently, the Environmental Working Group suggests avoiding all creams that contain this ingredient. Dr. Schaffran believes the basis for the EWG recommendation is misleading. Here’s why:

The association between cancer and retinyl palmitate is based on animal studies where large amounts of the ingredient are applied to the skin of rats and then the animals are irradiated with high doses of UV radiation. This hardly translates to what happens when a small amount of retinyl palmitate is included in a sunscreen formula applied to human skin. Generally, retinyl palmitate is used in very small amounts mostly as a preservative to help keep the formula elegant.

In fact, another well-known derivative of Vitamin A is a prescription anti-aging cream called Retin-A or tretinoin. There’s also an over-the-counter alternative called retinol. And there are numerous scientific studies that show that these Vitamin A derivatives can be useful in preventing skin cancer when used regularly.

Another ingredient the Environmental Working Group advises against is Oxybenzone. Widely used in sunscreen, oxybenzone was recently in the news when a study indicated it could possibly cause hormone disruption and/or cancer. Unfortunately, there is no scientific consensus on this and it’s equally likely that a small amount of this ingredient poses no health risks to humans.

But if you are concerned and you want to avoid oxybenzone or retinyl palmitate, they are many choices available. You might want to choose a mineral-based chemical-free sunscreen that contains the active ingredients Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide for broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection.

Skin Cancer Prevention Starts Now

When it comes to sunscreen, let’s not throw out the baby with the bath water. Skin cancer is a very real and serious problem. 80 percent of the lifetime damage to the skin happens before the age of 18, so incorporating sunscreen application in to your family’s daily routine is an important prevention measure. Do your homework, read labels but don’t panic. Enlist the help of your dermatologist and ask lots of questions. But please sunscreen every day. And remember, don’t be shy…re-apply!

Robin Schaffran, M.D. is a board-certified Dermatologist who has been treating parents and children in her Beverly Hills private practice for over 10 years. She is an attending staff physician at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and over the years, she has developed an expertise in caring for children’s skin. She has lectured extensively on the subject of skin cancer prevention and has been quoted in publications like the “Los Angeles Times” and “U.S. News and World Report.” She also created Dr. Robin’s All Natural Chemical-Free Sunscreen especially for children and adults with sensitive skin. It is the first product in what will soon be a complete line of Dr. Robin for Kids skincare available here http://www.drrobin.md/product.html.

Carlsbad, CA (Vocus) June 3, 2009

Eco-friendly hair care company, Eufora Intl. (http://www.eufora.net)]], explains exactly how summer leaves hair in disrepair and how to protect hair from the beach, chlorine, and those pesky UVA and UVB rays. “The swimming pool has more hair depleting chemicals than just chlorine. You’ll find copper, which is the green hair culprit, as well as oxidizing agent bromide. A day at the beach is not much better. Salty sea air and water rob hair of natural moisture leaving it dry, coarse and damaged,” said Don Bewley, Eufora Intl. cofounder.

Issue #1 – Sun Damage: “Think about a fabric exposed to the sun: it fades and so will hair color,” said Don Bewley, experienced hairdresser and Eufora Intl. cofounder. The sun’s UVA and UVB rays fades hair color faster on persons with greater outdoor exposure, especially during the summer. Photochemical degradation of hair is the result of light radiation attacking hair proteins, the cell membrane and hair pigments. Essentially, amino acids in the cuticle are damaged creating dry, brittle hair with many fly-aways.

Issue #2 – Ocean Water/Air Exposure: Moisture-depleting sea air and water can really do a number on hair, especially when combined with sunlight. Oxidation occurs when hair is exposed to water, air or sun and even moderate exposure can fade color. To define oxidation, it is anything (i.e. water, air or sun) that adds oxygen to what it contacts. Free radicals are byproducts of oxidation that can interfere with normal cell function and seriously damage cells.

Issue #3 – Chlorine: Chlorine is used to kill bacteria in drinking water and pools, but keep in mind it is also used in bleach to remove pigment in color. Not only does chlorine discolor hair, it damages proteins in the cuticle.

Thankfully with a few adjustments to a hair care routine, summer hair damage can be minimized. Here are a few recommendations:

Recommendation #1: Use Protection

Hair products that provide sun protection from UVA and UVB rays should be used year-round but during the summer it is the most critical. Multiple products offering sun protection can be layered for increased protection including leave-in conditioners, styling and finishing products. Hydration Leave-in Conditioner. Piece Works Defining Paste, Formatte Finishing Creme, Elevate Finishing Spray

Recommendation #2: Detox

Use a quality, nondrying chelating shampoo, often referred to as a clarifying shampoo, at least once per week and more often for avid swimmers. Chelating shampoos will remove mineral buildup and environmental pollutants. They also help prevent green hair. Choose an EDTA and sulfate-free shampoo to ensure hair is not stripped of its health and hair color. Urgent Repair Shampoo, A Detoxifying Treatment

Recommendation #3: Moisturizing Treatments

A moisturizing treatment or mask is crucial in keeping hair nourished and looking great. Choose a protein and nutrient rich product and don’t skimp on the time. Leave it on for at least 15 minutes to ensure proper penetration of the hair shaft. Here’s a tip, apply the treatment and leave it on while lounging by the pool. Urgent Repair Replenishing Treatment

Recommendation #4: Antioxidants

One more important summer survival must: choose products containing effective antioxidants the same way we choose foods rich with antioxidants like Vitamins A, C, E, selenium and zinc. Antioxidants work to neutralize free radicals before damage can be done to hair. Piece Works Defining Paste

Grand Rapids, Mich (PRWEB) June 4, 2009

Amway Global Independent Business Owners (IBOs) have once again earned the company first place in online Health & Beauty (H&B) sales. According to Internet Retailer’s annual Top 500 Guide to the web, Amway Global is ranked first in the Health & Beauty category for the sixth consecutive year, and 28th in overall web sales.

Amway Global is the North American affiliate of Amway Corp., a worldwide leader in direct selling, with more than three million IBOs in more than 80 countries and territories. Amway Global’s Top 500 Guide ranking is based on estimates made by Internet Retailer, since Amway Corp. does not report sales by individual market. Enterprise-wide sales for Amway Corp. were $ 8.2 billion in 2008.

According to Internet Retailer estimates, Amway Global’s online sales surpassed $ 904 million in 2008. The online H&B category grew 14% to more than $ 2.9 billion, with Amway Global’s sales estimated to represent more than 31% of that category.

“The leader for online health and beauty sales for six straight years is not a label most people would normally associate with Amway Global, but it’s one we’re extremely proud of,” says Steve Lieberman, Amway Global’s Managing Director. “The ranking would not be possible without the hard-working Independent Business Owners who drive our sales. It’s also a great testament to the quality and appeal of our key health and beauty brands, NUTRILITE supplements and ARTISTRY skin care and cosmetics.”

NUTRILITE is the world’s leading brand of vitamins, minerals and dietary supplements, based on 2008 sales, and ARTISTRY skin care and cosmetics is one of the world’s top five largest-selling prestige brands of facial skin care and colour cosmetics (based on a study by Euromonitor International).

The NUTRILITE and ARTISTRY brands are among more than 450 unique, high-quality products manufactured and marketed by Amway Corporation. These exclusive brands are supported by more than 60 Research & Development labs worldwide, approximately 500 patents, and a 180-day money-back Satisfaction Guarantee.

Internet Retailer’s definitive ranking and analysis of America’s 500 largest e-retailers is based on annual 2008 Internet sales, researched by Internet Retailer and confirmed by retailers. This report includes company financial, operational and performance data, as well as vendors in key categories.

Glasgow, Scotland (PRWEB UK) 1 June 2011

A student has landed a placement at Good Creative, Scotland’s top design agency after winning a challenge to produce a branding and marketing strategy for a range of fruit drinks.

Sophie D’Agostino, 21, devised a mock campaign to launch Kate’s, a new range of healthy fruit drinks for children destined for supermarket shelves.

Her successful response to a challenge set by the Glasgow-based agency, involved creating a series of cartoon superhero characters to match the four flavours included in the range.

Her prize is a four month long work experience placement with Good, which is ranked by the Design Business Association (DBA) as the most effective design agency in Scotland and the third most effective in the UK.

The agency’s award winning team had already devised a brand identity for Kate’s, a company founded by Katherine Walker, a natural therapist from Glasgow, who was frustrated at being unable to find suitable, affordable lunchbox drinks for her young son.

While water and diluted fresh fruit juice were the healthiest choices available, she was concerned that many included artificial additives and high levels of sugar.

Walker set out to fill the gap in the market by devising a range of natural, healthy fruit juices with added herbal ingredients. She is now in negotiations with two major supermarket chains and hopes to launch her range on the market within the next year.

Good used the campaign as the basis for a brief given to third year design students at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee.

Twenty one Students were asked to create a name and brand identity for the range, taking into account its target market, the health benefits of the product, Walker’s status as a concerned mother and her background in herbal medicine.

They were also asked to consider what the brand values should be, how the product would be positioned within the existing drinks market and how it would distinguish itself from competitors.

Sophie said: “We had pretty much free reign with the brand as long as we conveyed the message of a caring, small cottage industry with Kate, a trained natural therapist at its core and showed the drinks unique qualities, such as added vitamins and prebiotics.

“Kate is central to the brand, so I wanted to keep the focus on her. I chose superheroes as I felt children relate really well to them and that it was a nice twist that Kate was acting as the hero of the lunch box world, fighting the evil additives and protecting our children.

“I also created four illustrated characters to help engage children with the brand and wrote the copy for the cartons in a style which both children and adults would find interesting and amusing.”

The challenge was set by Keith Forbes, co-founder of Good Creative, who is a guest lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone. He now plans to make it an annual event.

“There are limited opportunities for potential recruits into our industry to gain first-hand experience of the world of work,” said Forbes, who is the only Scottish board member of the DBA.

“This was a valuable exercise as it gave us, as potential employers, the opportunity to work closely with the college to produce leavers whose skills are matched to our needs.

“We were impressed by all of the work but Sophie’s submission showed an admirable a level of creativity and maturity that stood out.”

Gordon Robertson, Lecturer in Graphic Design at Duncan of Jordanstone, said it was a rewarding experience for all the students.

“The project initiated by Keith Forbes proved to be extremely valuable in augmenting our continuing practice of close liaison with the industry. The student group benefitted immensely from constructive criticism and pointers.”

Sophie hopes the success will help her to land a job in the industry when she graduates next year.

“I really enjoyed working with Good Creative and I’m thrilled to have won a placement with them in the summer.

“Although I worked hard, putting the best of my abilities into the project and was looking forward to presenting my work to Keith, I was completely blown away with the positive feedback I was given and absolutely delighted to be offered a placement with the agency.”

London, UK (PRWEB) February 21, 2012

Fine Treatment gives 3 top tips for keeping the prostate in a healthy condition: (1) use the new Thermobalancing Therapy that terminates prostate enlargement, (2) reject medications that do not stop the prostate growth and (3) give careful consideration any prostate surgery and question the pressing need for it, as any surgery has negative side effects.

The crucial things to remember are that prostate enlargement is common (most men get it), unpleasant (incredibly), resistant to all sorts of medication (always), and its cause is inside the prostate that requires the time to heal (gradually) with the temperature balance improvement (which is achievable).

According to the US National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, the results of an international survey show that BPH, although a benign disease, has a considerable impact on the patient’s quality of life. Its progressive nature and the identification of risk factors for progression warrant further investigation.

The use of Dr. Allen?s Device for Prostate Care is the fundamental tip that has become possible after Dr. Allen’s discovery of the Origin of Diseases and the development of the Thermobalancing Therapy. Dr Allen?s therapeutic device is designed as a comfortable belt to be worn around the lower back area. The prostate gland is located inside the body in the close projection to the coccyx. So, on the outside, the lower back area is in the closest vicinity of the prostate. So the key component of Dr Allen?s device, i.e. the natural thermo-element, is applied precisely over the lower back area and acts locally all the time while the device is worn. A short video demonstrates how easy is to use Dr. Allen?s device: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQPPNtG3UAs.

?Prostate enlargement must be treated straightaway as this problem can lead to urinary tract infections, urinary retention and even kidney disease,? says Dr. Allen. ?While treatments with medication and surgery can lead to serious complications, the number 1 tip is to start using the new Thermobalancing Therapy ASAP- as it is the only harmless method that improves the condition of the prostate gland.?

Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) January 11, 2012

Sharon Kleyne, host of the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water syndicated radio talk show, recently interviewed Marguerite McDonald, MD about pediatric eye care and what every parent should know about preventing low vision and blindness in children. The interview may be heard on-demand on World Talk Radio, Voice America, Green Talk Network and Apple iTunes and Twitter.

Sharon noted that according to the World Health Organization, there are 1.4 million blind children in the world, and many more with low vision. Three-fourths of blind children live in the poorest regions of Africa and Asia, where 80% of blindness is preventable or correctable.

Major causes of childhood blindness in wealthy countries include genetic disorders, and lesions of the optic nerve and higher vision centers. In poor countries, blindness may be caused by measles (preventable), Vitamin A deficiency (preventable), harmful folk remedies (preventable), cataracts (curable), retinopathy of prematurity (curable), glaucoma (treatable), retinoblastoma (the eye usually can’t be saved but the life can) and infections such as conjunctivitis (curable). Causes of low vision include amblyopia (curable), strobismus (curable), nearsightedness (correctable) and developmental problems.

Sharon Kleyne, Marguerite McDonald and the World Health Organization agree that education is the key to preventing low vision and blindness in children. Frequent eye exams and the availability of medical care are most effective when parents are educated about the need for eye screenings and exams, and about what to look for in a child’s visual development.

Dr. McDonald believes that eyes are the most important organ in relating to the outside world. And yet there is much less education available on eye care than with most other health areas. Sharon Kleyne agreed. According to studies by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, sponsor of the “EyeSmart” campaign, Americans know virtually nothing about eye care.

Marguerite McDonald noted that the better hospitals routinely test infant vision. If there are no problems, they probably won’t mention it. All babies should have a pediatric eye exam because with conditions such as lazy eye, pediatric cataract (present in one birth in 50) or glaucoma, the earlier they are caught, the easier they are to correct. These conditions all cause the eye to send incorrect messages to the brain. When the brain begins ignoring messages from the bad eye, correction becomes far more difficult

Sharon asked about eye and brain communication. According to Dr. McDonald, the retina is actually part of the brain. Eye-to-brain pathways begin developing immediately after birth and it is critical that the baby’s eyes send correct messages. She notes that vision is, in large part, learned behavior (the ability to interpret what you see and to fill in the blanks), and poor vision in childhood can lead to learning and behavior problems.

Dr. McDonald notes that most schools have vision screening programs and are able to detect poor vision because they need only a simple eye chart. Diseases such as dry eye or glaucoma are much harder to detect and a doctor is required. However, an educated and observant parent is always the first line of defense.

Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water is sponsored by Bio-Logic Aqua Research and Nature’s Tears
